Nintendo 3DS will bring "Glasses Free 3D" to Handhelds

Nintendo's announcement that its next generation hand-held gaming platform will feature glasses-free 3D, once again places Nintendo in the forefront of technological innovation.  Time and again, Nintendo has pushed the technological envelope, reinventing what we think of as gaming.  Mario Paint, the Wii, Wii Fit, the Gameboy and the DS.  All of these products have taken gaming in new directions, unfettered by the preconceptions of established market.  3D, partciularly 3D without glasses, is a bold, innovative step that will help propel the company forward even as it faces new competition fr

Good Deal: Get a 4GB Eye-Fi SD card for $50

Eye-Fi wireless SD cards for your camera are my favorites for all around use because they allow auto-upload to the web while I'm on the road. Google is selling the $70 version of the card for $50.  The catch is that the deal comes with a 200GB of storage online included in the price.  It is a good deal even if you don't want the subscription.  Sign up and then set the subscription to not renew.  You're still getting a bargain on the chip.   Note: this card doesn't handle RAW images...there is a new, more expensive pro version that does. But, if you're shooting jpgs this is a real bargain.

Portraiture Plug-In for Photoshop

Although intended primarily for professionals, Portraiture Plug-in for Photoshop will be an invaluable addition to the toolkit of every designated family photographer. You already know who you are.  You're the person who is responsible for documenting family events - an often thankless job because the way people think they look, is often somewhat different from reality.

Posters from George Lucas' Collection

On a visit to George Lucas' Big Rock Ranch (for a preview of Clone Wars Season II) I took these shots of some of his amazing collection of film posters. Most are European, a few from Asia. There are also a few Star Wars related pieces and other art mixed in for good measure.

Photobook Creator

Now you can make professional looking bound photo books - the same kind you may have created on line at some photo sites - with the Photobook Creator Kit.

Review: Flip Video Ultra Series Camcorder

PureDigital has been in the pocket camcorder business for several years now, having started with disposable video cameras. Their newest, deluxe version comes in multiple colors, like an iPod Nano and can shoot up to an hour of video at a time. They've kept to the mantra of "keep it simple". The gizmo is nearly foolproof. Four buttons control most of the functions: on/off, record, play, and delete.

3D Cameras and SLR Lenses

Sometimes getting a new point of view can reinvigorate your creative spirit. With that in mind I've been looking at a number of photography gadgets that are specifically designed to see the world in a different way. 3D is making a big comeback in movie theaters. Films from Superman Returns to animated adventures are showing up in IMAX 3D. Could 3D technology also spice up my still images?

Review: Akvis Noisebuster Photoshop Plugin

NoiseBuster Box ShotProcrastination is a wonderful thing. For year’s I’ve intended to purge my digital photo library of underexposed, noisy photographs. You probably have them too: mottled with greens and purples, you know there but for an extra F stop or so, you might have had a great photo. Anyway, only laziness and a certain sense of regret has kept me from getting rid of those flawed photos.

Review: Adobe Lightroom 1.1

From digital cameras cometh digital photos – lots of them! Adobe’s Lightroom is an attempt to bring some automated control and streamlining to the mundane processes of digital developing and organization. Not intended as a replacement for Photoshop’s layered approach to digital editing, Lightroom is designed, not for the “heavily edited” masterpiece or mulit-image collage, but for the ordinary grind of getting pictures from the camera, organizing, adjusting, and then sharing them.
