Review: Boogie

Comedy and creativity meet in this music game for the Wii that has players dance, sing karaoke, and even produce their own music videos using 38 songs mostly from the 70's 80's and 90's. The characters and locations have a cartoony space-age theme, and the characters' back stories (which are revealed in story mode) are funny.

However, once you get past the bright colors and fun characters you are left with disappointingly flawed game play. Unlike Dance Dance Revolution, Boogie does not force players to get up and move, in fact I found that the less I moved the better my score got.

In dance mode you move your Wii controllers to the music. To get combos you have to move your controller in the direction that the arrows are pointing to on the screen while still keeping time. I found this to be exceptionally frustrating, because even when I was moving the controller in time with the music, and going in the right direction, the game would tell me that I was doing something wrong. I was comforted to know that it was not just me who was getting this feedback from the game when a less rhythmically-challenged tester had the same problem.

One thing that I really enjoyed about this game was the music video maker. In this you can take the video of your game play and add fun effects to it. This, however, was only enjoyable when I did well- I don't enjoy reliving my video-gaming humiliations.

The karaoke game play was the same as all of the other good karaoke games out right now- it rated you on how well you sing the song. Unfortunately, there isn’t enough karaoke in story mode for my taste

Boogie gets a lot of things right for a Wii game: It is funny, creative, and has lots of replayability. Unfortunately, it suffers from control problems that take a lot of the joy from what would otherwise be many Boogie nights and days of play. – Ali Oppenheim
