JamBanz Bluetooth Speaker

Mobile music in a smallish form factor.

I've received a number of ultra-small Bluetooth speakers this year, the most common form factor being key rings, and the most common "feature":  awful sound quality

Know the joke Woody tells in Annie Hall about the guy who ironically complained of the food at the diner being not good, and in such small portions.  Most ultra-small bluetooth speakers are a lot like that, just without the irony.  The sound is terrible and the volume too low.  I've tried a tassle of them this year, usually hunks of plastic attached to a key ring and they have all been so bad that I chose to ignore them.

The JamBanz is a bit different.  It is a speaker attached to one of those slapbands, so it kind of resembles a watch.  However, it is thick, like three or four watches stacked on top of each other.  So you won't be wearing it as a fashion statement.  However, that size means that the sound is much better (and louder) than the other supersmall speakers I've tested.

Now you're not going to be getting a lot of funky bass pumped through a JamBanz; instead, the sound is very reminicent of AM music played through a transistor radio circa 1977.  Rather than wear it on your wrist, you could hook it onto a bag strap or even a bicycle handlebars and have some music without cutting yourself off from the world around you.  Of course, there are a lot of places this will be intrusive to others, so be cool and play nicely with others. 'K, campers?

I've seen complaints that it is difficult to pair the device.  The truth is it took me three attempts to have my Android phone see the unit, and I was just about to throw it in the junk pile, when it suddenly became visible.  I've had no problems restoring the pairing when the unit was turned off and on.

I wish it had a mute button.  Oddly, turning it off causes it to loudly state "JAMBANZ OFF", just when you want it to be quiet.  There are volume controls, but you can't control the track selection from the device.

I used the device with the phone in my pocket and wandering about my apartment with no issues of audio cut-out, even when moving my arms and doing chores.  Obviously, the speaker is for specific use situations (please not next to me on the subway), but if you know someone with a need for mobile, headset-free music, it makes a good stocking stuffer!
